Chai and Character.AI are the two big mobile apps for chatting with user-made AI characters. Both filter explicit content. They differ on price, on how they handle age, and on what you get for free.
Short answerCharacter.AI is the better free choice: unlimited messages, a larger library and voice calls. Chai suits people who prefer its bots and are ready to pay; its Ultra tier ($29.99 a month) costs three times c.ai+.

Chai: age and content18+ (rated 18+ on app stores, per Chai). Chai describes itself as an 18+ service, but its safety page says its models and safety systems are designed to refuse sexually explicit content. Optional safety filters can also hide mature content.
Character.AI: age and contentOpen-ended chat restricted to adults since late 2025. Sexual content is filtered for everyone. Since late 2025, users under 18 can no longer have open-ended chats with characters (US rollout from November 24, 2025).

Character.AI is free with ads; (c.ai) lite costs $4.99 a month and c.ai+ $9.99 a month or $94.99 a year. Chai Premium costs $13.99 a month or $134.99 a year, and Chai Ultra $29.99 a month (US App Store prices, October 8, 2026). Chai also says some regions require a paid subscription to use the app at all.
Content and age
Neither app allows explicit content. Chai calls itself an 18+ service and says its systems are designed to refuse sexually explicit material, with optional filters for mature content. Character.AI filters sexual content for everyone and has removed open-ended chat for under-18 users since late 2025.
Features
Both apps let you create characters and chat on iOS and Android. Chai characters reply with their own voices; Character.AI offers voice calls. Chai’s web version is still listed as coming soon, while Character.AI works in the browser too.
