Official site Character.AICharacter.AI filters sexual content for every user, and since late 2025 it no longer lets under-18s have open-ended chats. Janitor AI is adults-only; on its website, characters with sexual or romantic themes are allowed when tagged “Limitless”. Its mobile app starts in a safe mode and only shows NSFW content after you switch on a setting from the website.
Both are usable for free. Character.AI offers unlimited messages with ads, plus (c.ai) lite at $4.99 a month and c.ai+ at $9.99 a month or $94.99 a year in the US App Store. Janitor’s free tier gives unlimited chats with its standard model; Janitor+ costs $12.99 a month in the App Store and multiplies the context by five.
Janitor’s free model keeps roughly 8,000 to 9,000 tokens of context, according to its help center. Character.AI does not publish a figure, and better memory is one of the selling points of its paid tiers. Character.AI adds voice calls with characters; Janitor focuses on text, scripts and lorebooks, and lets advanced users connect outside models through an API key.

“Janitor AI vs Character AI (2025) | Best AI for Roleplay, Chat, and Storytelling?”, by AI Amped, published May 8, 2025 (8 min 25 s). An independent creator with no link to this site; opinions and scores in the video are the creator’s own. Playing it loads YouTube.
A narrated comparison of the two platforms’ origins, features, policies and communities. It predates Janitor+ and Character.AI’s late-2025 restrictions for under-18s, so use it for the big picture and rely on the dated facts above for prices and rules.
Both apps keep explicit content out on mobile by default, and Janitor is text-only. These three cover what people most often leave for: freedom, memory, pictures and voice.

Best for Free unfiltered roleplay
The most direct swap for Character.AI users who never paid: unlimited messages on the free plan, a giant community catalog and no adult filter, with ads and queues as the trade-off.

Best for Conversation and memory
Nomi is the closest in spirit to Character.AI: the focus stays on conversation, but your companion keeps track of what you said last week, and adult topics are not blocked.

Best for Everything in one app
Where Character.AI stops at text and calls, Candy AI adds pictures of your character, voice notes and short video clips, and explicit roleplay is allowed between adults.
